Joseph F. Engelberger (born in New York City, July 26, 1925) is a physicist, engineer and entrepreneur who is referred to as the "Father of Robotics".[1][2] Licensing the original patent awarded to inventor George Devol, Engelberger developed the first industrial robot in the United States, the Unimate, in the 1950s. Later he worked as entrepreneur and vocal advocate of robotic technology beyond the manufacturing plant in a variety of fields, including service industries, health care, and space exploration.
So far the first robot goes to the Chinese (it was a huge water clock with several automatons that did things like display plaques and ring bells), although many artifacts are being unearthed and cataloged that make it a tight race between the Iraq region, Egypt, Greece and India. A short history is in the link below.

That depends on what you consider to be a robot. In Ancient times mechanical device existed which could move and might be considered robots. In 1495, Leonardo Da Vinci is believed to be the first person to design a humanoid robot, a mechanical knight that could move its arms and head. But the term robot was not invented until 1921 when Karel Capek coined the term in the play R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots). The term comes from the word "robota," which is a Czech term for forced labor. In 1954, George Devol created the Unimate, an industrial robotic arm that lifts hot metal and stacks it.
