It is important for items to be biodegradable if they are likely to end up in landfill (e.g. bin bags). This is because plastic can take hundreds of years to decompose and we have very limited landfill space.

The best method of disposal is re-use or recycling so biodegradable waste such as paper and card would be better off recycled or used in your compost bin. If waste is composted instead of discarded in landfill then this will reduce emissions of the greenhouse gas methane, which is produced from a landfill site when biodegredable waste decomposes.

When detergents reach the lakes, water bodies and environment, they give a lot of harm to the animal life. This includes fish, birds and other animals which feed on lakes. The detergents increases the growth of algae, which gradually dissolves all the oxygen in the lakes which eventually leads to the extinction of many species. So, it is important for detergents to be biodegradable and environmentally friendly.

When there is too much trash in the sewage drains, some trash drain into the ocean! If the trash doesn't disintegrate,many living creatures such as whales, could get trash stuck in their blowhole, and they can't breathe. One little piece of trash could end up killing a whole generation of animals! If the trash is biodegrateable, (like paper) it won't harm the animals, it'll just safely dissolve onto the ocean.
