Actually, all organic materials can be composted. However, you are usually advised not to add meat containing refuse to the mix. This is because meat products will attract animals who will mess up the compost bin.

Yes, some food items can be composted, but no, not all will be. Leftovers and scraps make effective contributions to heaps and piles as long as they contain no dairy products, greases or oils. No food that still is capable of seeding or sprouting should be included.

It is unwise to compost waste food as it is inclined to attract vermin.

Busy lives, confusing regulations, and environmental naivety perhaps account for limits to the popularity and practice of composting.

Specifically, it can be far less time-consuming - and concomitantly far less sustainable - to trash edibles and recyclables. Composting involves sorting through what is no longer needed and used for what will break down in a designated bin, heap or pile. It also requires regular work in the sense of making sure that the compostable materials receive adequate air and moisture. But the result of 3-12 months' effort will be access to dark, fresh, nutrient-rich compost to amend, fertilize and mulch gardens and lawns.

Compost is organic materials broken down. For home composting, you should only put vegetable matter. This is because any meat or bones will draw animals to dig in it and also it will smell bad and have maggots. A commercial compost operation gets much hotter and they can compost meat.

Busy lives, confusing regulations and environmental naivety perhaps account for limits to the popularity and practice of composing. It can be far less time-consuming, though concomitantly far less sustainable, to trash compostables and recyclables since composting involves sorting through what no longer is needed and used for what will break down in designated bins, heaps, piles or pits. It requires regular work in the sense of making sure that the compostable recyclables receive adequate air, heat, light and moisture even though the result of those three to 12 months of vigilance will be access to dark-colored, fresh-smelling, nutrient-rich compost to amend, fertilize and mulch gardens and lawns.
