Most recycling has to be done by hand, at least part of the time. A bottle that still contains liquid is usually thrown away (the liquid could be dangerous). A plastic bag even full of bottles is usually thrown away (the plastic bag can't be recycled and who knows what else is in there?). All the sorting takes time and is expensive for the recycling company.
Take the lids off your bottles (and recycle them too, but separate from the bottles). Never put any plastic wrap or plastic bags in the recycling bin, or any containers containing food. Rinse out steel cans if possible, and any hard plastic containers that your recycling will accept.
