Just fine. Some have a hub motor, others have an extra drive socket on the rear wheel and a motor by the rack. Real slick ones have a special crank and the motor in the seat tube.
For them to be counted as electric bicycles they usually require that the rider pedals to keep the motor running. Otherwise the can be seen as electric scooters, which is another ballgame entirely.
