Biochemical Oxygen Demand is the measure of the amount of oygen consumed by microorganisms in decomposing organic mattter in water bodies.

BOD directly affects the amount of dissolved oxygen in water-bodies (i.e. rivers and streams). The greater the BOD, the more rapidly oxygen is depleted in the stream.
