The holy month of Ramadan is the Islamic month during which the holy Quran started descending on prophet Mohammad (May god's peace and blessing be upon him) by God through the Angel Gabriel (Jibril).

In this month the rate or amount of good work you do is increased hoping God more rewarding. People are more motivated to give charities and other good deeds. They are looking, by their fasting, to be rewarded by God forgiveness and satisfaction.

In addition,

  • The most important benefit of fasting is obedience to ALLAH (God) commanded us to fast the whole month of Ramadan. This is the fourth pillar of Islam five pillars.
  • Second, it leads to spiritual self purification and full submission to ALLAH (God).
  • Third, it is a motivation not to approach what is prohibited to be done by religion. If you used, during fasting, to forbid yourself from eating food, drinking, doing sex with your partner of marriage (things that are allowed out of fasting) then you will be used to forbid yourself from doing what is prohibited to be done as drinking Alcohol, gambling, prostitution, cheating, etc...
  • Fourth, you will have closer feeling with the poor suffering and you will be more tending to give donations and charities to those who need.

Muslims must fast in Ramadan unless they haven an excuse (too old or too young, sick, on travel....., etc.)

Ramadan teaches many things to a Muslim. People sometimes say "I cant stop smoking", "I cant stop cursing", and other things along those lines. However, during the month of Ramadan, a Muslim would take advantage to make changes. Most people that smoke would stop smoking and those who curse would stop cursing, etc. While fasting during Ramadan, you can't smoke and cursing is forbidden as well. This would give a person the chance to develop a habit of not doing these things. Ramadan is the month of patience. It teaches a person patience and how to wait, and the main point is to feel what others don't have and feel how others feel. Today you can perhaps eat and drink anytime you want, food is available all the time. But on the other side of the globe from where you sit, perhaps there is a mother who hasn't eaten in days and her children are dying of hunger or thirst, which does happen in many places, especially in Africa. So by fasting you can feel what they feel. Islam is not about yourself or your people, but it's for all Muslims to feel for each other. You cannot go to sleep where your Muslim brothers and sisters are dying of hunger. Ramadan is a opportunity to change your life, to change things you wouldn't change normally, by the help of your religion as a way to do it.

Ramadan also teaches you to appreciate what you do have, like after not eating all day, you then realize how much something like eating and drinking is very important and valuable, and then you respect it.

It is a blessed month as well.
