I'm not a Catholic so I don't know a huge amount about what his full story is or why he became a saint but one of the things he did was, when he was in jail for being a Christian in Roman times, leave a love letter to his jailer's daughter who he had fallen in love with. This being very romantic his feast day became associated with doing romantic things. The modern greetings card industry has jumped on this and hyped it up out of all proportion, and as with a lot of things like Christmas people have started to forget what it was originally about and even that it is actually a saint's feast day.
