It's a bit of a misnomer that Prince Albert introduced the Christmas tree to Britain. This has come about however, by the publicity at the time of Queen Victoria's reign and has entered English folklore and unfortunately some publications.

The Georgian's were the first royals to introduce the Christmas tree. A tree was erected at Queen's Lodge, Windsor, by Queen Charlotte, the German born wife of George III, for a party she held on Christmas Day, 1800, for the children of the leading families in Windsor. This fact is on record, so Queen Charlotte rather than Prince Albert takes the accolade for this festive first.

The Christmas Tree was introduced to England by Queen Victoria's husband Albert and his family. It was a German tradition (as they were German) and it was adopted by the country, who were fascinated with the tradition of bringing trees indoors and decorating them elaborately.

German merchants who were living in England decorated their homes with Christmas Trees. Decorations had been made in Germany since the 17th century and there were English people who had trees before Queen Victoria was ever featured in the news with her Christmas Tree.

Traditionally this is normally attributed to Prince Albert of Sax-Coburg (Quenn Victoria's husband). An engraving of the royal family published around the 1850's was widely distributed showing them around a decorated Christmas tree at Osborne. This led to it's widespread popularity in Britain and also spread to the USA. The tradition was already known in the Royal family however from the middle of the 18th century again introduced through the Germanic connection of Queen Charlotte of Mecklenberg-Strelitz George IIIs wife. Victoria was already aware of the tradition before she met Albert. The first decorated trees were mentioned in 16th century Germany although the pagan tradition of trees pre dates Christianity .

Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria. Albert was from Germany, where the tradition of Christmas trees goes back to the period of the earliest Catholic missionaries in Germany, who wanted to give the new German converts a substitute to their traditional worship of Oak trees as nature gods.

Once Victoria and Albert appeared in newspapers of the day with their Christmas tree, everyone throughout the English speaking world had to emulate them and get one too.
