During pre-Columbian times, Mesoamerican peoples (Aztec, Mayan) celebrated the lives of the departed, giving offers to the goddess Mictecacihuatl, queen of the underworld.
When Spanish conquistadors settled Mexico in the 16th century, they adapted Roman Catholic traditions to those of these Mesoamerican peoples, to make the conquered peoples an easier transition to Catholicism.
