When Spanish conquistadors settled Mexico in the 16th century, they adapted Roman Catholic traditions to those of these Mesoamerican peoples, to make the conquered peoples an easier transition to Catholicism. This meant the Day of the Dead became a fusion of the ancient Mesoamerican tradition plus the Christian's All Soul's Day and All Saints' Day.
