On the first night of Hanukkah you light two candles. You always light the candle at the top. This candle is used to light the other candles. Excluding the candle at the top, you light the candles like this:
* Day one- the first candle. * Day two- the first and second candle. * Day three- the first, second and third candle. And so on.
For a Chanukah menorah, one candle is lit the first night, two the second night, etc. One extra candle is always added (that's used to light the other candles and is called a Shamos), so there's a total of 9 candles on the 8th night.
For the traditional menorah in the Great Temple in Jerusalem, there were seven branches, but it was lit with oil, not candles.
The candles on the Menorah can be of any color.

The menorah of the Holy Temple had 7 oil lamps (Exodus ch.25). However the specialized Hanukkah menorah (Chanukiah) has 9 candles.
The candles (or oil) of the menorah are lit with the shamash (the helper candle), which is positioned on the menorah either slightly higher or lower than the other candles but not on the same level as them.
The candles are put into the Hanukkiah (Hanukkah-menorah) starting on the first evening) of Hanukkah. The candles are lit in the early evening after sunset or later.
For the Hanukkah menorah (chanukiah), any kind of candle that will fit, provided they burn at least 1/2 hour after dusk.
There are no traditional colors for Hanukkah candles. They can be anything.
They can be any color.
In some households, each person lights a separate menorah. In others, the father of the family lights the menorah.
