In the 12th century children celebrated Saint Nicholas Day, when gifts and charitable offerings were given. Germany, France and Holland celebrated the day on December 6. It was much more religious than modern celebrations of the holiday, but gifts were still given to children and the poor.
When distributing gifts in Holland St Nicholas is accompanies by Black Pete. Black Pete is the one to actually give out the gifts.
