Clement Clarke Moore [July 15, 1779-July 10, 1863] is the most commonly attributed author of the poem whose beloved lines begin 'Twas the night before Christmas...'. In fact, Thomas Nast [September 27, 1840-December 7,1902], from whom it ironically is said comes the word 'nasty', based his representations of Santa Claus on the poem.
