They were highly disciplined, with intelligent and effective commanders, were issued good quality equipment, and were well trained in the use of their equipment and effective combat formations and manoeuvres. The Romans also made a point of learning as much as they could about their enemies prior to engaging them in combat so they could take advantages of the enemies weaknesses and take contingencies against their strengths.

Of course this was not always the case, most of the major defeats of the Roman army can be traced to failures of one or more of these factors.

The Roman army was so successful, because they had well trained men. They build camps were the soldiers were trained. It didn't matter if you were a cavalry, an Artillery operator, and Infantry, an Archer or an Auxiliary soldier. In the camps you trained with weapons which were double so heavy as in real life so later on when you were in a war it would be easier for you to handle all the different weapons. You were also trained to walk a few kilometers with your weapons in marching format. You were also taught how to build a stable camp in a short time.

The Roman army gained its strength from its physical and mental training. The physical training was carried out in a twice daily routine. The mental training was a partner to the physical as the Roman soldier was psyched out to win because of his superior training and equipment. They also believed that the gods were on their side and if their faith began to waiver, their general always gave them a pep talk before any battle reminding them of their superiority, the weakness of the enemy and that the gods were on their side as the omens were (always) good for battle.

Why was the roman army so successful with there training?

The Roman army was so successful with their training because they used a three pronged approach to training and motivation. It goes without saying that the army was healthy and physically fit (at least in its heyday). They were trained in the use of weapons and artillery and honed both their physical conditioning and weapons skills daily. Physical discipline was liberally used, adding to the motivation for the men to "get it right". The Romans also were possibly the first to use psychological motivation. The addresses or "pep talks" given by the commanders before battles are ones of Roman superiority and the enemy's weakness.

Why were the Romans so skilled in battle?

The roman army was so successful in battle because of their superior training, both physical and psychological. The physical training, besides the standard strength, endurance and javelin aiming accuracy, was also many times supplemented by training from ex-gladiators who contracted with the army to teach one-on-one techniques. The phychological training came from the commander's speech given before every engagement, that not only smeared the enemy, but reinforced the Roman belief that they simply were better than any enemy and could not lose.
