It is important because all that we know, basically, came from the Roman Empire. They are our ancestors (the Romans), and if it wasn't for the Romans, the modern world would be nothing like it is now. Thanks to the barbarians (as well our ancestors, and the thugs who contributed to the empire's fall), we are not as advanced as we could have been. Because of the fall of the Roman empire, there was a Middle Ages, which is when everything, from technology to common sense, completed reversed and people literally started over. The Renassaince was a rebirth of all the ways of the Old World (the Roman Empire), and all the knowledge and technology rediscovered kept building up until this very moment. So, if the Roman empire had not fallen from all the countless reasons, we would today be an exceedingly advanced society much better than we are now. This is stuff no one should be ignorant of, because all we have can be to thanks to the Romans.

The Roman Republic was important because they had two tpes of citizens, Plebians and Patricians. In early Rome, the plebeians (also known simply as plebs) may have been that part of the Roman population whose origin was among the conquered Latins (as opposed to the Roman conquerors). Plebeians were contrasted with the patrician nobility. In the period of the early Roman Republic, membership in the Senate may have been denied to the plebeians, and restricted to the patricians. Since the ruling body of the Senate was more interested in itself than others, the plebeians suffered. Over time the plebeians were able to amass wealth and great power. By the time of Caesar, the patrician Claudius chose to become a plebeian (something he could do through adoption) in order to hold an important political office, the Tribune of the Plebs. So that more than just one person had a voice in the Government.

The significance of the Roman Republic is that it constituted 482 years of the 1,200 years of history of the ancient Romans. Much of the Roman imperial expansion occurred during the Republic. It was in this period that Rome become the dominant power in the Mediterranean and also conquered Gaul.

The Roman Republic also provided inspiration for political theorists in the Late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It also provided inspiration for the makers of the American Constitution.
