Augustus claimed he gave over his power to the Senate which marked the end of the Roman Republic and the beginning of the Roman Empire. When Rome became an empire it already controlled most the Mediterranean World but later other Roman leaders continued to expand the empire a bit by bit. By the early AD 100s the Romans had taken over most of central Europe and all of Gaul. The Roman conquests promoted trade. People in Italy needed raw materials and with that they got other precious goods. To pay for these goods the Romans made a form of money or currency and their coins were accepted most everywhere. Stable Government and a well-run army helped Roma grow wealthy in safety. This peaceful period is called the Pax Romana, or Roman Peace. During this time Rome's population increased making trade grow. As a result the living standard improved. Also the Romans created many great accomplishments.
During the period of expansion of the Roman Empire a lot of money was made from war booty and the sale of war captives as slaves. This did not last forever as imperial expansion stopped and then the empire came under constant attacks from outside.
A great part of Rome's wealth was generated by trade. Imperial expansion had integrated vast areas into a vast trading network were agricultural products, manufactures, metals, precious stones, marble and granite, spices, perfumes, textiles, and hides were produced around the four corners of the empire and transported and sold all around the empire.
Agriculture was the main economic activity. The owners of large landed estates made a fortune through agricultural production and the sale of their products.
Mining was another profitable activity.
Rome levied taxes in all the provinces of the empire to generate revenue for public works.
ancient Rome became extremely wealthy as it expanded its empire throughout the Mediterranean world and a good part of what is now Western Europe. Areas of conquest or nations and territories under Roman rule were taxed and the money and or goods flowed to Rome. In certain situations such as Carthage, this city-state was required to pay Rome an annual tribute that was in the millions of dollars. As slaves worked many mineral rich mines throughout the empire, these materials were obtained at cheap labor costs.

Constantine, who made Christianity the state religion of the Roman Empire in 325 AD
Constantine split the Roman Empire into the Holy Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire. It should be noted however that the emperor Diocletian (284-305 AD ) made this easier as he was the first to divide the empire into two parts, a western and eastern empire to be ruled separately. The emperors who followed Constantine, Julian and Theodosius I, made permanent the division of the Roman Empire into an eastern and western half.
For his reforms. His most famous action was when he split the Roman Empire in to halves. The West Roman Empire (fell in 476 AD) and the East Roman Empire , later the Byzantine Empire (fell in 1453 AD).
