War on the Eastern front against Russia was marked by atrocities by both the "Vons" (Germans) and the "Ivans" ( Russians). Being captured meant you would probably be tortured to death and so this fact led to the utmost brutality .

The Germans viewed the Russian as "Untermensch" (Less than [sub]human) so it made it easier to kill without mercy . The Russians , understandably , felt the need to reciprocate in kind .

The war on the western front during World War I was characterized by trench warfare, where both sides dug extensive networks of trenches and engaged in protracted battles. In contrast, the war on the eastern front involved more mobile and fluid warfare, with large-scale movements of troops and frequent exchanges of territory. Additionally, the eastern front saw the involvement of multiple countries and was often marked by ethnic and nationalist conflicts.
