The rise of Christianity did play a small, but not insignificant, part in the decline, in that it eroded traditional Roman beliefs and values and caused conflicts between Christians and those who continued to hold onto the old pagan philosophies.

Christianity transformed the religious map of the Roman Empire. It became the religion of the masses of the empire in Late Antiquity. Mainstream Christianity (the early form of the Catholic and the Orthodox churches) became the state religion of the empire, whilst other Christian sects were branded heretic and persecuted, particularly Arian Christianity, which was popular around the empire. Catholicism at that time was called Latin or Western Christianity and it was the religion of the western part of the empire. The Orthodox Church was called Greek or Eastern Christianity and was the religion of the eastern part of the empire.

The pagan Roman religion did not disappear, but it became sidelined and was persecuted.

The term fall of Rome refers to the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire, which crumbled under the weight of the invasions by the Germanic peoples. Some pagan Romans thought that Christianity contributed to this by weakening the fighting spirit of the Romans. This was not true. In actual fact, the spread of Christianity created more religious unity in the Roman Empire

It did not. Christianity became the religion of the masses in the empire. Christian worship was declared tolerated with the edicts of emperor Galerius in 311 and co-emperors Constantine I and Licinius in 313. This restored internal stability as the prosecution od Christians started by emperor Diocletian a decade earlier had created widespread unrest. Christianity was made the state religion by emperors Gratian and Theodosius I in 381.

Some pagan Romans thought that Christianity had weakened the fibre of the empire, but this was a biased view.

Christianity did not contribute to the fall of the Roman Empire. It became the main religion of the empire and state religion. It gave the empire a sense of unity. Roman pagans thought that it contributed to the fall of the empire by weakening the fighting spirit of the Romans. This was a biased view and the causes of its fall were much more complex than that.

When did the Western Roman Empire fall?

The most commonly used date is 476, but other dates are also used. Some historians just say 5th century, or the second half of the 5th century. Clearly it was a long, drawn out affair. The East Roman Empire survived until 1453. The name we use for it is the Byzantine Empire, but that name was never used at the time, and they were nearly always called the Roman Empire during the Middle Ages.
