Marcus Fabius Quintilianus, commonly known as Quintilian, a Roman rhetorician from Hispania said: "Art is inspired by nature, a work of art differs from nature because an artist will transform nature into art." Quintilian also said: "The perfection of art is to conceal art."
In the Middle Ages, especially during the Renaissance, artists were patronized by the Catholic Church and the wealthy and influential people like the Medici family. Many of the commissions were received for religious settings like Chapels, Altar-pieces, etc. Unlike today's art scenario, artists were more associated with craftsmanship and were commissioned to carry out painting work for others.
The Roman emperors were more sharpers of Roman values that reflections of Roman values. They were absolute rulers who legitimised their rule through propaganda. One powerful tool for propaganda was art which glorified the emperor. Imperial cults were also promoted usually in the form of the worship of a god who was favoured by the emperor. Two aspects which reflected Roman values was their respect for the Roman gods and their emphasis on military victory, which was highly valued by the Romans.
Middle Age art changed over time. In the early Middle Age artist weremonks and priests who were based in monasteries. but the later Middle Ages saw the start of Gothic Art and the advances of art. They broke away from the influences of the Byzantium art style and towards more realism that lead to the Renaissance art style. The famous names of the Middle Ages included men like Donatello, Diotto, Alberti, Cimabue, Brunelleschi, Angelico, and Ghiberti. Lorenzo Ghiberti was a famous sculptor and painter. He was founder of the Renaissance Donatello worked with statuary work. Giotto di Bondone was an architect, sculptor, and painter of the early Renaissance He pioneered new ideas of naturalism and created a sense of pictorial space. Leon Battista Alberti developed architectural principals were founded on the importance of painting as a base for architecture. Cimabue was the last great painter who worked in the Byzantine tradition and founded the movement towards greater realism. Filippo Brunelleschi was an artist, sculptor, and architect. He developed a technique forming the basis of Renaissance architecture and also developed the use of perspective. He built the dome of the church in Florence. Fra Angelico was the most famous artist of the Middle Ages. He did religious art.

In the Middle Ages they sponsored and commissioned art. The church needed art to display the Bible stories because people couldn't read so they told the stories through the art and stained glass windows. Good example of the art they commissioned is the da Vinci Last Supper and the Sistine Chapel painted by Michelangelo.
