Answer from ADictionary:I am a confident historian of the Ancient World to the Modern and have been passionate about history of all countries for many years. It is to my own personal research and knowledge that the medieval era started from around 400 AD and ended in 1400 AD. This marks the 1500's as the start of the Renaissance era and a major significance in the Fine Arts. I have come to these dates for the Middle Ages as it has been recorded in English history documents that Richard III of England was recorded as the last King of the Medieval era thus this marks the end of the Middle Ages/Medieval period as being in the 1400's.
The medieval period is so called because it derives from Latin medius (mid or middle) and aevum (time, age), the idea being that it describes a period between the ancient and modern worlds - the "Middle Ages".
The problem is that for a very long time, scholars recognised another period of time - the so-called "Dark Ages", which covered Viking and Saxon history (roughly the period 400 AD to 1066). The period was seen as having very little archaeological evidence, hence it was "dark" or unknown.
More recently, as a result of better archaeological techniques, the Saxon/Viking era has been included by some scholars (by no means all) with the medieval era, so for them the middle ages extend from right after the collapse of the Roman Empire, up to about 1500 or 1550. Again, no two scholars can agree on a precise end date for the medieval period.
In general terms, the ancient period ended around 400 AD, while the modern era began in about 1500. Everything between canbe described as medieval, but many historians still separate the Saxon/Viking era from true medieval. All Scandinavian schools teach that the medieval period started in about 1050, with a separate, distinct and very proud Viking era before that.
The Middle Ages began in the 5th century and end in the 15th century.

the middle ages didnt have a purpose. they were a time period. im not really sure when, but it was the time of knights and lords and ladies and stuff llike that.
The simple answer is that the medieval period is also called the Middle Ages. There is some complexity, however. The period from the 5th through 10th centuries was called the Dark Ages, but the term Early Middle Ages is more common now. What used to be called the Middle Ages, a time from the 11th to 15th centuries, is now often counted as the High Middle Ages (1000 to 1300) and Late Middle Ages (1300 to some time in the 15th century).
