According to the Wikipedia article on knitting, our oldest examples of knitted fabric come from Egypt of the first millennium AD, which would seem to put the invention of knitting into late antiquity or the early Middle Ages. There is a link below.
To find north you will need the magnet, a needle, a piece of very thin paper & a bucket of water. First you need to take the positive side of the magnet and slide it across the first half of the needle, as if you were striking a match, fifty times. Then do the same with the negative side of the magnet and the other side of the needle. Afterwards, put the needle in the paper so that there are 2 holes and the needle lies horizontally, then place in the water. The positive side of the needle will point North.

They used an ancient form of knitting called naalbinding [also known as "needlebinding" or "one needle knitting"] to make mittens, hats, socks and legwarmers. They also wore wool clothing during the winter [as opposed to the linen clothing that they wore during the warmer months] and a wool cloak. They would also keep a fire going in their house [it would get kind of smoky in there, but they needed all the warmth they could get] If they ran out of wood to burn they would sometimes burn animal dung. It smelled horrible, but it was better than freezing to death.

i think it means 'slip marker' which means take the marker from the left hand needle and put it on the right hand needle
it simple means put your needle into the next stitch as if you are going to purl and do what ever they say
slip 1 - insert needle into stitch as normal then just pull it off the left needle onto the right without knitting or purling it
slip marker just means move your marker from your left needle to your right needle. a marker just sits on the needle and shows the place, its not part of the knitting and will be removed when you have finished.
