Manifest destiny was the quasi-religious and patriotic idea that the Western Expansion oif the United States was a divine mandate. There are echoes of this in the Battle Hymn of the Republic which also makes favorable glances ( though the operating method is mistaken)- of telegraphy ( By the dim and flaring lamps) that is not how it operates, more like coded dots and dashes. but. The line does exist in The Bible- From age to age you gather a people unto yourself so that From East to West, a perfect Offering can be made! This probably refers to the apparent trajectory of the Sun ( that is how it was explained when I was in Sunday school- and not politics. it might be added that technology, unlike say Evolutionary science, was pretty much Okay and this was especially true of communications devices such as printing, typewriters, telegraphy, radio, etc as these could be ( and are) used to spread the gospel. The Manifest Destiny concept is- for all intensive purposes , obsolete and somewhat unpopular. The British favored similar ideas with their Empire activities in civilizing backward countries as a ripple effect of colonialism, which is another subject.

How were the concepts of manifest destiny and social Darwinism used to justify conditions in the 1800s?

Manifest destiny and social Darwinism were used to justify horrible actions toward minority peoples during the 1800s. Manifest destiny was the idea that the US should expand westward, and was used to steal Native American lands. Social Darwinism was the idea that the lighter skinned people were, the better they were. It was used to justify institutional racism.

What is meant by manifest Destiny?

Manifest Destiny was the idea that the US would stretch from sea to sea, covering everything that it now covers. Manifest means "Obvious" and destiny usually refers to God's will. So it was something that people felt would just happen because that's what happening anyway. i couldent of said it better myself lol

What is the literal meaning of Manifest Destiny?

It is man's belief that God wants him to expand his country. For example, during the 1840s the United States grew and many citizens were moving west for better opportunities.

Why was the concept of manifest destiny such as appealing one to Americans in the 1840s?

It was the “destiny” of the United States to expand from the Atlantic to the Pacific and, some believed, we would also benefit the economy of the nation if we expanded south into Mexico and north into Canada. Americans in the mid 1800s came to believe that they had an obligation to increase the domain over which their democracy and liberty would benefit all. Economically, Manifest Destiny was favored by industrialists, businessmen, and the developing transportation industry. We would acquire the needed raw materials and also provide products to sell to the peoples in the areas we controlled. Politicians favored Manifest Destiny because it would expand our system of government into areas that were corrupt or incompetent. Most of the public supported Manifest Destiny because it brought a feeling of pride in our nation, a patriotic and nationalistic duty to help others.

What economic benefits could the US get from following the ideals of Manifest Destiny?

Economics is all about growth. The more your company grows, the better it does. Growth is good.Manifest Destiny was the idea that it was America's most important (manifest) destiny to grow from shore to shore. As the country expanded, new markets were formed for goods and services. Those new markets in turn provided resources such as coal, oil, precious metals, and later on food and their own manufactured goods and services. All this boils down to one thing: economic growth.Today, we believe that it is America's Manifest Destiny to "Americanize" the world in terms of freedom and democracy and capitalism. If other countries shared these ideals, American business and, by default, its people, would prosper. But there is a downside, too. If the whole world were to "Americanize," then competition would grow exponentially greater than it is now. The consumers would prosper, but America as a whole might not. With all that said, however, the main benefit of Manifest Destiny principles is economic growth.

What were two examples of expansionism that helped the Manifest Destiny?

When Thomas Jefferson authorized the Louisiana Purchase and sent Luis and Clark to explore all the newly begotten territory, that was an example of the manifest destiny. He purchased land that extended to the pacific ocean in an attempt to better america. Also, after the mexican american war, america bought all of ca, az, nm, nv, and one or two other states instead of just taking the small disputed stretch of land in texas. This was due in part to the influence on territorial thinking the manifest destiny had.

How did manifest destiny set the stage for America imperialism at the end of the 19th century?

Yes, without a doubt it did set the stage for a new Manifest Destiny that expanded American control beyond our natural borders. It became apparent to "jingos" like Teddy Roosevelt that in order to provide new markets for our industrial products and in a better effort to provide for the defense of the nation, we would need coaling stations for our navy and commercial shipping. That could only be achieved through Imperialism. Also, Social Darwinism was a belief particular to the age. Many felt that it was their Christian duty to civilize the savage peoples and use the natural resources of the lands to their best advantage.

What does the term manifest humanity mean?

I've encountered the phrase 'manifest humanity' a few times before, generally in the context of futurism or speculative fiction. The phrase can be most closely associated with the late 1900s American 'manifest destiny' which suggested that (white, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant) Americans should expand the United States from the Atlantic to Pacific ocean, and including Canada, Mexico, and Central America in some cases and realize the "destiny" of the US.'Manifest Humanity' suggests the realization of humanity's potential. In many contexts this means much greater space exploration, technological development, and in some contexts greater international cooperation and improving the minimum standard of living. Manifest Humanity can also (in a speculative fiction usage) refer to a policy more in line with the genocidal undercurrent of 'manifest destiny' suggesting that Humanity should conquer everything it may encounter in space by any means necessary. "Manifest sentience" would be a sort of combination of the two, suggesting that sentiences (humans, machine intelligences, aliens, etc.) should better themselves.
