In some countries, women were allowed to rule, and the barons usually accepted them.

In some countries, women were not allowed to rule. In such places, the barons did not accept usually accept them as rulers, but there were exceptions. Perhaps the most important exception was Queen Margaret I of Denmark, who took over as ruler, even though the law said she could not rule. The members of the Danish nobility knew and trusted her, and did not trust the man who was the rightful heir under the law. She won the war that ensued and ruled for about three decades. During that time, she also became queen of Norway, Sweden, and Iceland, and created out of these countries what was called the Kalmar Union.

Who can be a medieval queen?

The wife of a king is a queen, so anyone who was married to a king would be a queen and if they lived in the middle ages, she would have been a medieval queen. In addition, a very few women who were the daughters of kings or of claimants to a throne became queens in their own right. This was uncommon because the rules in most places only permitted males to rule a kingdom.
