The Battle of Baltimore was to have been a combination of a land and sea assault, with British Major General Robert Ross manning the land forces while Vice Admiral Alexander Cochrane would lay siege to Fort McHenry. The Americans thwarted the plan by killing Ross before he got to Baltimore as he battled with American forces outside the city. His death lead to British troops being led by an inexperienced lead officer. American troops from the preliminary battle, retreated to Baltimore, where they and combined troops thwarted the British invasion.
