They just didn't take any sides. Loyalists are colonists who remained loyal to Great Britain (EXAMPLE: Thomas Hutchinson), patriots are colonists who wanted independence (EXAMPLE: Mercy Otis Warren) and neutralists were colonists who took neither sides.
