Depending on what camp they were in, American colonists were either anxious or reluctant to break their ties with Britain. Loyalists or Tories were determined to keep their relationship intact with Britain, they were most numerous in the South. Patriots, especially strong in the New England area, were all for a complete break with the British. The Neutrals, on the other hand, could see value on both sides of the issue. There were still strong familial ties with Great Britain and many liked King George III but felt Parliament was the problem.

American COLONISTS wanted INDEPENDENCE from their British owners or leadership. Britain would NOT allow that independence, so the Colonists fought them for it.
