Joan was a female in a male dominated army. Joan was still a teenager while most soldiers were older. Joan was a peasant while most soldiers came from nobility. Joan was illiterate and could neither read nor write. Joan had no combat experience nor any military training Joan had no money and had to beg others for her horse, clothing, armour and weapons. Joan was small of stature, barely 5 feet tall.
Joan of Arcs achievements were unusual for several reasons, including; 1. She was a woman 2. She was a YOUNG woman 3. She not only had a interest in Warfare, she was very good at it. 4. She was not only accepted but adored by the French troops once she proved her worth. All these things were incredibly unusual in a time in which women were not usually considered knowledgeable about such matters, nor interested in them. It is also unusual that the Lords of France consented to allow her command.
Joan of Arc had tremendous courage, aided by the belief that she was doing the
will of God. She was only 5 feet, two inches tall, but she was very strong and was
an expert horseman. She was a great source of inspiration and leadership
to the soldiers in the French army, whom she would often exhort to boldly face the
English troops and not to be afraid. Her soldiers followed her with confidence and
trust and enabled them to defeat the English in several key battles: the Raising of
the Siege of Orleans and the Battle of Patay, where over 2 thousand English
soldiers were killed in an open field battle. Later she conducted the dauphin,
the French crown prince, to Rheims to be coronated as King Charles VII. These
events in 1429 eventually led to the end of The Hundred Years War, driving the
English forces from France.
Because society tends to program them to be at home look after the kids and home. the result was they were not trained to use weapons or become involved in military affairs. As the situation was and still is in many places of the world. Manny women feel a first responsibility too their children, and the age at which they might be involved in risking their lives being involved in war many put their children first. this led them into a situation where their culture tended to exclude them from many activity's.

Rheims (l429) and Orleans ( same year) are her best known campaigns. there was a poem about Joan of Arc which unfortunately had a rhythmic quality that suggested the upbeat song- Happy Days are Here again- and there were various towns mentioned in the song- not necessarily battle sites. Tours, Arles and Domremy ( her home town) reply- and Joan of Arc goes riding by- it sounds TOO much like ( Happy Days are Here Again!)
It has been suggested (Charlie) which may have honored her Patron, King Charles Vii. That"s Charles the seventh. it is easy to remember- as the word Charles has seven letters. Charles was married once, and also had a mistress Agnes Sorel, who had an elaborate state funeral, quite unlike Joan. about a year ago the body of Agnes Sorel was disinterred and an autopsy was performed. I kid you not. a Girl who has been dead for over 500 years!- and not an Egyptian mummy, either.
Joan of Arc is the correct spelling, not Joan of Ark.

In Orleans, France, there is a month long celebration including a huge parade. Joan liberated Orleans may 8th, 1429. So the parade and celebration is around that date. Other cities in France have parades and less elaborate ways to celebrate Joan of Arc. Almost all towns, small and large have statues of Joan of Arc. The previous answer that French people go to church is wrong.
