The ancient Roman forum was a marketplace. The people went there basically to do their shopping, and to transact various business. The fora were also good places to catch up on the latest gossip. In the Forum Romanum, the main political forum, there was a notice posted to tell the people of the day's dealings in the Senate.

The fora in ancient Roman towns were important because they were a shopping center, a civic center and most important a business center. Rome, like most Mediterranean towns was an outdoor type of place. You could go down to the forum and meet someone who would perhaps offer you an opportunity to go partners on a business deal, or you could grab a friend and ask him to speak for you in court. You could get or give a dinner invitation. The fora were business and social centers of the Roman towns.
