Decisions were made about their life, and they had no knowledge of why those decisions were made. When they were freed, many former slaves wanted to get educated so they could understand American laws and know what their rights were; they also wanted to gain the skills needed to be taken seriously in society. Even back in the 1860s, the better you could read or write, the more skills you could acquire and the more money you could earn.
