Because most slaves were not allowed to have an education during their time of enslavement, they were at a great disadvantage. Decisions were made about their life, and they had no knowledge of why those decisions were made. When they were freed, many former slaves wanted to get educated so they could understand American laws and know what their rights were; they also wanted to gain the skills needed to be taken seriously in society. Even back in the 1860s, the better you could read or write, the more skills you could acquire and the more money you could earn.

The African-American vote was important to Republicans because they wanted to attract support from minority voters and broaden their electoral base.
