John Peter Zenger was accused of liable for articles that he published his New York Weekly Journal starting with the the first issue on 05nov1733 opposing the policies of the colonial governor William Cosby. He and his paper continued to blast the Governor until he was arrested on 17nov1734.

He was held in prison and finally brought trial the following August. At the trial, his defense convinced the Jury that its decision should be based on the truth of the content of the articles.

He was acquitted.

This case was the keystone upon which the US Freedom of the Press is based.
