Why was WW1 different from wars that preceded it?

Alliance Systems were in place that pulled many nations to war

The advent of the 'tank' in later stages of the war.

Ariel dogfights were fought with bi-planes

GRAND SCOPE Many nations involved

England, Russia(end 1917) , France, Serbia, Ottoman Empire, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy, Canada, United States(start 1917)

Fighting in India, African Samoa, Europe, Balkans, ALL OVER (truly a World War) The past wars before WW1, people fought it like it was some kind of honour. People volunteered for soldiers to fight and the war occurred only at the frontline. During WW1, with the leapt in military inventions, battles were concentrated on the civilians through the use of long-range artilleries and planes. WW1 to the people is like a nightmare compared to the preceding wars, to them, are like glory or some sort.

to go into evry difference would take forever but some of the big ones were:

wide spread use of macine guns, Evan though they existed befor the war they were deplyed far more effectivly and genrals tryed to conter them with incorect tactics

Scale, a war this big had never been seen befor

Chemical and biological war

the introducton of the tank, intended to break the trench war they them selfs offten got bogged down in the mud and laked infantry support

Air war, althogh nothing like the aireal battal of WW2 pilots still took sto the skys and fought though there primary role was inteligence gathering( this is also where the ball point pen comes from)

sea war, submarins had a devistating affect of merchant shipping as they did not comply with same rules of war that conventinal warships did, also this was the age of the super dreadnought ships bigger and pore powerful than ever in clashes of titans.

Many people say submarines and machineguns, however Holland submarines were in the Russian & Japanese inventories during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05; and machineguns were heavily used during that 1904 war.

Although submarines did make their debut in mass service in WWI, no preceding war can take credit for using mass amounts of chemical warfare & airplanes as WWI can.
