The New Hampshire Colony was founded in 1679. No one knows who were the first European settlers to reach New Hampshire. But-wide scale exploration of the area began in the 1600's. In 1603, Martin Pring of England sailed a trading ship up the Piscataqua River. Pring and his crew may have landed in Portsmouth. The French explorer Samuel de Champlain landed on the New Hampshire coast in 1605. John Smith reached the Isles of Shoals. He renamed them, "Smith's Islands." In 1620, England's King James I founded the Council for New England to encourage American settlement. The council granted David Thompson land in present-day New Hampshire. In 1623, Thompson and his followers settled at Odiorne's Point (now part of Rye). Edward Hilton settled Hilton's Point (now Dover) in the 1620's. Some historians believe these settlements began at the same time. Other's believe Hilton's came later. Other early settlements include Strawberry Bank (now Portsmouth) established in 1630; Exeter and Hampton, founded in 1638. It was in 1629, when John Mason named the region New Hampshire. In 1641, the Massachusetts Colony gained control of New Hampshire. In 1680, New Hampshire became a separate royal colony.
