Based on the circumstances in 1861, it can be almost called a miracle, almost is important, that a new central government ruling the new Confederacy was built from scratch. The South had no central government, no army or navy to speak of and much of it had to do with the efforts of Jefferson Davis. Davis is sometime maligned as a leader, this is not true. His efforts to organize the South and help fight a Union army with almost unlimited resources to fight a major was a remarkable feat, to which much credit belongs to Jefferson Davis.

He was the first and only President of the Confederacy - elected because he appeared to represent the good face of slave-owning. (He treated his slaves so well, they didn't want their freedom.)

They also felt he would be a good war-leader, as he had a respectable record as a colonel in the Mexican war.

In fact, his military judgments were unsound, and he was unable to control either his feuding Generals or his cabinet.

His lack of calibre, up against his opposite number Abraham Lincoln, was a major factor in Confederate defeat.
