He is considered great since he never lost a battle in the mere 13 years he conquered the majority of the known world.
When he was 14 years old, he successfully tamed a horse that none of the breeders could ever manage. The horse, Bucephalus, was rode by Alexander on most of his wars. He fell in battle on the Hydaspes River in 326 B.C.
Alexander spread Hellenistic culture and the language of Koine from Egypt to India.
Alexander the great was NEVER called the king of Greece, nor was he ever known by that title. He was the King of Macedon, Hegemon of a united Greece, Great King of Persia, and Pharaoh of Egypt.
Alexander was never king of Greece because Greece was not a kingdom, it was a conglomeration of city-states with different forms of governance. Alexander the Great took over the Hegemony of a united Greece from his father Philip II after his assassination.
The Hellenic world comprised many tribes/peoples (Achaeans, Ionians, Dorians, Aitoleans, Arcadians etc) who settled in city-states, stretching all around the Mediterranean and Black Sea littorals. They sometimes formed leagues for military reasons. They also formed the Amphyctionic Council to regulate Hellenic culture, including religious affairs which included the Olympic Games.
Macedonia was a Homeric style rural kingdom and retained a king, which some of the other states had discarded centuries earlier. As well as Hegemon of Greece, Philip II was also, the leader (archon) of the Thessalian League, giving him the ability to recruit Thessalian cavalry, and he held seats on the Amphictyonic Council. Alexander inherited the title of Hegemon of the Greeks, as well as King of Macedonia. He also took the title King of Persia when he conquered that empire and was anointed as Pharoah in Memphis.
I think Alexander The Great is called the "Great" is because his father Phillip the II was the ruler of Macedonia, his father conquered Greece, he wanted to conquer Persia but he died. His son Alexander conquered Persia, and so much more land. He conquered all the way to the end of India i think, he also did that in only 11 years, and he didn't loose one battle during that time. He only went back to Macedonia because his army was so tired, so that is why he is called Alexander The Great.
Because he was a Great leader. He united Greece and freed the Greeks of Asia Minor, and conquered the Persian Empire.
Alexander deserves the epithet 'great' because he was a brilliant military tactician, an inspirational and charismatic leader, an excellent fighter/rider and a successful ruler.
Alexander the Great spent most of his ruling years on an unprecedented military campaign through Asia and northeast Africa, and by the age of thirty, he had created one of the largest empires of the ancient world, stretching from Greece to northwestern India. He was undefeated in battle and is widely considered one of history's most successful military commanders
