A major driving force behind this stage in history was that colonists had no formal representation in the Parliament, and thus came their sayings based around "No taxation without representation." They objecting to being forced into taxes when they had no representation to make their will known in the British Parliament. The colonists originally asked for parliament to grant them the seats they wanted.
