The figure of "Lady Justice" comes from Roman mythology. In ancient Roman religion, it was a goddess, rather than a god, who represented justice. The Romans believed that women exemplified morality (moral values): women maintained the home and taught the children, so it was believed they were more suited to being fair and yet compassionate, as Justice ought to be. It was also believed that because men were more war-like, they would turn justice into rule by force.
