Lincoln favored a gradual Reconstruction of the South, as did Andrew Johnson who succeeded him. But the Congressional version simply punished the South without actually solving the problem of how to bring freed slaves into the existing society. The animosity against the excesses of the Carpetbaggers made integration of blacks and whites even more contentious.
In a metaphysical sense, the death of Lincoln was almost a martyrdom after he preserved the integrity of the country and prepared it for its eventual destiny.

He was not that of what you would expect of a president. He was a great military general that just got lucky with becoming the vice president under Abraham Lincoln's presidency. After the assassination of Abraham however he became president. He was part of the National Union Party. All assassinations are tragic and terrible and it is hard to say that one is worse than another. However, I would say that the Lincoln assassination was the worst because it came at an extremely difficult period in US history when exceptional leadership was badly needed. For a variety of reasons, the difference between Lincoln's leadership ability and that of his successor seems greater than that between the other assassinated presidents and their successors. Also, Lincoln was the first US President to be assassinated-- possibly his assassination made future assassinations more likely.
