They think it's a god or demon of some sort. They worship it, so I guess it's just their culture. The dragon is discribed as the most powerful being in China. Myths say it can summon rain, sunshine etc. some dragons can comtrol the weather while others control the earth. A legend says that there was once 4 dragons:the red dragon, the yellow dragon, the black dragon and pearl dragon. One dragon loved the earth and when he saw that the emperor would not let rain fall on a village, he took pity on that village. gathering, the 4 dragons each took a mouthful of water and spread it over the village. When the emperor saw what they did, he got angry and imprisoned them. A nimth took pity on them since they were only trying to help and turned them into China's most important rivers: the red river, the yellow river, the black river and the pearl river. Also our ancestors envied their aility to fly. This is why dragons are so important to china. Resource:My mom, who spent her childhood in China.

The Chinese Dragon, called Nian (means "year" in Chinese) came to China every year to eat the crops and children. The Chinese people figured out that the color red and loud noises scared Nian, and so, every year the Chinese dress and decorate in red and set off firecrackers, now known as Chinese New Year.
