because a world war is when the whole world is at war against one united force. World War 2 was the Russia, America, and many others against nazi, Germany and the Japanese.

Isn't not having a world war a good thing?

I suspect another reason is because of M.A.D., (mutual assured destruction), where the attacker and defender would both be wiped out by each others' nuclear weapons. Basically no-one has been crazy enough to press the button first during conflicts (yet).
