In a healthy relationship, there shouldn't be as much control as vulnerability. This means the other person could hurt you if he wants to, or she wants to. If you are strong, you will right the wrong and find someone who will be there for you and doesn't need a hold over you. This is when you lower your defenses to see if this other person really is worth the wait. You find out if he really wants you and there is a reason to stay together.
There are various reasons why a woman would stay with a jerk, or a man who treats her badly, some of which are:
- Sometimes they think they can change him, so they stay with him, hoping he will change for the better. But usually if a guy is a real jerk, there is no hope of changing him. Even if he could change, it would have to be because HE wanted to change; a woman cannot make him change.
- Some women (even on a sub-conscious level) think they deserve to be treated badly.
- If she grew up in a home where their father was a jerk, and treated her mother badly, so she grew up believing that type of treatment was normal.
- She may feel the jerk is the only man who would want her, so she 'settles' for something less than what she deserves.
- Some women feel being alone is worse than being treated badly, so they choose to stay with the jerk.
- Sometimes, when a woman loves a man, she feels she would rather stay with him and be treated badly, than to be without him.
- If they have children together, she may feel she owes it to the child to stay with him. But the fact is, NO marriage (or relationship) is better for a child than living in the middle of a bad one.
- She may feel financially trapped, and feel she has no other options.
Women who are with men like that will never be really happy. And as long as they are with him, they won't be as likely to ever find a good man, one who will treat them well. So if you are in a bad relationship, you owe it to yourself to get out, and find someone who will make you happy.
