The answer is as wxpansive and diverse as the people who serve in the military. Some of the most common answers I've heard are as follows: -Patriotism (my main reason and a default for anyone who really has no clue why they did it) -College money -Citizenship -To better their lives -Enlistment bonuses -To kill (not a good answer when asked by your recruiter) -Adventure and excitement -Lack of a better option -To become a responsible adult -Travel -To protect the rights and freedoms of the American people Like I said earlier, the answers are endless and depend on the person. Military personnel, especially Army soldiers, are usually very willing to engage in conversation with civilians, so just ask. Make sure to keep the conversation away from politics though. We are very nice, but we may get a little heated and emotional if you become political or confrontational.

soldiers do not enlist in the army - soldiers are already in the army civilians enlist in the army to become soldiers who then protect the country.

American citizens enlist in the U.S. military to protect the United States Constitution, their fellow Americans and to protect the foreign nations from unwanted rule. Also American citizens enlist in the U.S. military for assistance in paying for college (ie. Tuition Assistance at $4,500.00 a year and the MGIB up to $47,556.00), actual on the job experience that civilian employers want, Medical and Dental insurance, a guaranteed job and pay check on the 1st and 15th of every month, 30 days paid vacation, possible cash bonuses, pride of service, Family Heritage or because of economic struggle. Contrary to popular belief Soldiers of today's US Military are not convicted felons, they do not come from a troubled past, they were not offered a "Go to war or go to jail deal", they are educated model citizens who answered the call to serve their country in a time of need, and to improve their lives and the lives of the American citizens.
