The first slaves brought to Portugal by Portuguese came in 1444 from Northern Mauritania. Dom Henrique (also called Henry the Sailor) left Portugal in 1441 A.C. with a few ships. They captured twelve Negros (men, women and children) and carried to Portugal as slaves to convince the king that it was cheaper to get slaves directly from the African west coast than to buy them from Arabic and European middle-men.

Europeans wanted slaves in the Americas to provide cheap labor for their plantations and mining operations. Slavery allowed them to profit from growing crops like sugar, tobacco, and cotton without having to pay wages to the laborers. Slavery was also seen as a way to exert control and dominance over indigenous populations.
