The simple answer is that people are selfish.

But the truth is there are a list of ways kings justified their desire for control, including the idea that a strong central government is good for a country, which is true.

And the barons justified their desire for control by pointing out that limitations on the central government are good for the people of the country, and what is good for the people is good for the country, which also is true.

We could go on with this, including the thoughts of the middle class and serfs, and the truth is that their ideas were probably also just as true. So perhaps it is best to stick with the simple answer and forget the logic because it is just self justification. People are selfish.
