In 1915, during World War I, Allied forces invaded a small peninsula located in the Ottoman Empire and called Gallipoli. Located at the western tip of the Dardanelles Strait, the first narrow waterway allowing access to the Black Sea from the Mediterranean, Gallipoli was tenaciously defended by Ottoman (or, Turkish) defenders, who succeeded in blocking the Allied attempt to penetrate inland via their Gallipoli beachhead.

The purpose of the Gallipoli Campaign was to capture the Dardanelles Straits that were held by the Ottoman Empire. The straits would allow the Allies access to the Black Sea and thus they could get to Russia using a route other than the German-patrolled North and Baltic Seas.

The goal was to knock Turkey out of the war, then concentrate on Germany and Austria. Although the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire was in severe decline, their army proved to be much tougher than the Allies anticipated, and Gallipoli was a failure.
