From the perspective of the early sixties, the United States was at a point of high tension in our relations with the Soviet Union and Red China. One of the consequences of this tension was a tremendous respect (fear?) of anything communist.
When Vietnamese communist forces defeated French forces, the U.S. government was concerned that their Allie, South Vietnam, would fall to communism. As a member of the South East Asia Treaty Organization, the U.S. had promised to protect South Vietnam. U.S. forces were sent to South Vietnam to train their army.
When our troops began to face assaults from the North Vietnamese communist troops, more U.S. military assets were added to protect the trainers. This cycle continued to escalate until 1965, when entire divisions began arriving in South Vietnam to push communist forces back into the north.
Because of the concern over communist encroachment on other countries throughout the world, U.S. presidents were quick to use their military to stop that communist growth wherever they found it.
Australian troops were fighting in Vietnam as allies of South Vietnam, along with those of the US, South Korea, and New Zealand. Militarily, each of the allies fulfilled different roles and employed different approaches and tactics. See the Web Link to the left for further information.
1950-the U.S. begins to help France militarily and economically in the Vietnam War. At this point the U.S. is not involved completely yet. In 1965, the U.S. becomes fully involved in Vietnam (the "stuggle versus Communism" as it was justified). In October 1965, the U.S. defeats N. Vietnam forces near the Laos border in the first full-scale battle of the war.
The US wanted N. Vietnam to stop fighting in S. Vietnam.
Even though Vietnam is a communist country, the US does business with Vietnam. The US promotes good business. Friends? Sure, why not.
None. The US is not at war with Iraq. In Vietnam, the US was at war with North Vietnam.

If you were drafted to fight the war; you might not be happy about it.
US, Australia, New Zealand, S. Korea, S. Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines against North Vietnam.
Historians generally agree, that 1961 was the year in which the US became militarily involved in Vietnam. History may require a re-visit in this instance.
In 1961/1962.
North Vietnamese won the Vietnam War, and it is the year 1975, not 1990, that they militarily defeat South Vietnam.
Because the people who called it a World War were Eurocentric and did not care much about the rest.
Military advisors first arrived in Vietnam in 1950. America started sending troops into Vietnam as early as 1960, but they took no military action until 1965. The United States was actively (militarily) involved in the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1975.
On 2 August 1964, North Vietnam attacked two US Destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin. Congress authorized President Johnson to react militarily
They had been militarily defeated. There was no place left to fight over.
