The US did expand its territory after the US Civil War. One outstanding event was put together by US Secretary of State Seward. He agreed to purchase what is now the state of Alaska. At the time, many Americans saw no value in making this purchase. As it turned out, it was a wise move by Seward.
The first major US expansion came in 1803. The Louisiana Territory owned by France, was offered for sale to the US under President Jefferson. It was a huge territory that almost doubled the US's territory. Along with the vast lands, was the important city of New Orleans.
