The Soviet Union established satellite states in Eastern Europe because they feared the West.
Time and again it had been proven that their western border was weak, in the Napoleontic wars, in the Great War and in the Second World War it had been way too easy for attacking countries to penetrate that border.
Stalin wanted some kind of buffer zone covering his entire Western border, and that's why the satellite states emerged.
To show the world Soviet advancement and to gain knowledge of upper atmosphere. It stayed up for 3 months, sending bleeps back down to the Soviets.
In order to demonstrate that it had the booster power and navigational precision required to
drop missiles onto any point on Earth ... the whole purpose of the so-called "space race".
Simply because they could - and it served as an excellent chance to embarrass America, which did not have a satellite ready yet.
On the 4th of October 1957, the Soviet Union sent Sputnik into orbit. A month later the Soviets would send Laika, First living creature (a dog) in orbit around the Earth. The Americans thinking that they were years ahead of the Soviets had a nice little wake up call.

Spunik 1 was launched on October 4, 1957 and stayed in orbit until January 4, 1958. Sputnik 2 was launched on November 3, 1957 and stayed in orbit until April 15, 1958. Further satellites in the series were Sputnik 3 in May, 1958, and the satellites referred to as Sputnik 4 and 5 (actually early Vostok capsules) in 1960.
The satellite the Soviets launched in 1957 was called Sputnik 1. It was the first artificial satellite to be placed into Earth's orbit and marked the beginning of the space age.
The launch of Sputnik 1, the world's first artificial satellite, in 1957 was driven by the competition between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. The Soviet Union's successful launch demonstrated its technological advancement to the world, sparking fears in the United States and leading to increased investment in science, technology, and space exploration.
The Russians put the first satellite into orbit named sputnik.
Sputnik was launched into a low-Earth orbit. Sputnik was launched By the Soviet Union. It was the first artificial satellite to orbit Earth. it weighed about 98 pounds and took 90 minutes to orbit earth. when Sputnik was launched the Space Race began.
The first sputnik didn't actually crash but rather burned as it reentered the atmosphere in January of 1958. There were actually over 40 sputnik's released into space.
