The Americans were forced to join WWII because the Japanese Navy and Air Forces bombed Pearl Harbor on Sunday, Dec 7, 1941. On Monday, Dec 8, 1941, America declared war on Japan. The same day, Germany declared war on the USA.
The Germans never declared war on America. Germany never wanted a war with America. Hitler believed the US was weak because of its "Americana" or the fact that it was made of many diverse people. Hitler believed in a pure race and admired the Japanese for this, and as far as I can remember, declared war on the US because of the aspects of its people.
Japan's attack on the US Fleet at Pearl Harbor left them woth little room to turn th other cheek.
Many reasons, Germany was sinking American supply ships because the US was providing financial and military support to the Allied troops (England, France, China and Russia).
But Most importantly, Japan attacked the US naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, without a declaration of war or any warning that hostilities were being commenced, sinking most of the battle fleet.
The day after the attack, December 7th, 1941, President Roosevelt went before the US Congress and asked for a formal declaration of War with Japan in retaliation. With the exception of Janet Rankin (Montana), the US Congress voted unanimously for War.
President Roosevelt never asked for war with Italy or Germany before the Congress. Instead, three days after December 7th, Italy and Germany declared war on the United States.
They were not. Although they supplied the allies with weapons and supplies they were very reluctant to join the war. Only when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and Hitler declared war on the USA did they formally join the war. And even then it still took a long time of preparation and training before the industrial might and manpower reserves of the USA could really be brought to bear on the Axis powers.
Because the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, a US Naval Base in December of 1941. Prior to that unprovoked attack, the United States government had remained neutral, and in fact, public sentiment was opposed to the US entering the war. But once there was an attack on an American military base, the president and congress saw it as an act of war, and that drew the United States into World War II.

USA was not part of the British Empire; therefore, the USA did not wish to be involved in European affairs. Though the Americans continued trade with it's allies in Europe and Canada, they did not join the war until they were attacked by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor and when Hitler declared war on the US in 1941.
