The Allied Forces had to remove Nazi rule and Adolph Hitler from having any rule or influence on any one forever. They were an evil bunch of people. I am being serious here. They practiced genecide, murder, torture, brain washing, used children to fight the war, invaded nations, killed women and children without abandon and did not abide by treaties or peacekeeping values. The Allied Forces wanted democracy returned to Europe and Nazism erased. They managed to do that for the most part.
Potsdam Conference
they meet in the middle of no-mans land
The allies needed to open up a second front in Europe. If they did not, it was possible that Russia would fall to the German Army in the East and that mainland Europe would remain uder Nazi occupation. Europe was at stake. Hitler held all of a large portion of Europe before D-day. Hitler could have sent the soldiers in France to throw back the Allies in Italy or the Russians. D-Day was the defining moment for the war in Europe. Hitler knew that as long as we remianed in England, he couldn't reach them. Europe was at stake. IT was to decide to who would get the spoils of the war. If D-Day had failed, then Russia would have taken most of the spoils.

The primary purpose of the Yalta conference was to create a blueprint for the administration of postwar Europe, agree upon a method of punishing those responsible for war crimes and to decide upon borders for Germany and its neighbors.
