Vietnam is a dense jungle that when the planes crashed, and/or the troops were captured it was easy for the Vietcong to relocate them without American troops finding them. There were tunnel systems used by the Vietcong to travel without being seen as well. Between those factors and the camps it was hard to locate all of our men. There is speculation of some of them being relocated out of Vietnam altogether upon capture as well.

The estimate at the time by the american military leadership was: 2 million japanese and 1 million american soldiers.
In terms of the Vietnam Peoples Army, 1,100,000 North Vietnam soldiers lost their life. In addition there were approximately 251,000 Viet Cong deaths. There were a remaining 849,000 North Vietnamese Regulars that were in South Vietnam, but their fate is unknown.

Nearly 87% of the dead GIs in the Viet War were white. Over 88% of the men in country were white. These figures include Marines, Airmen, and Sailors, not just US soldiers.
